This digital experiment measures the equilibrium compositions for ammonia formation from hydrogen and nitrogen. Equilibrium can be obtained at different pressures and temperatures and the equilibrium constant is calculated assuming ideal gases. The equilibrium constants obtained over a range of temperatures are used to calculate the heat of reaction. Use the scroll wheel to zoom.
This simulation was created in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at University of Colorado Boulder for LearnChemE.com by Neil Hendren and Drew Smith under the direction of Professor John L. Falconer and Michelle Medlin. It is based on a simulation by Neil Hendren, Vladislav Denisenkov, and Abijith Trichur Ramachandran, which is a JavaScript/HTML5 implementation of a Wolfram Demonstration by Benjamin L. Kee and Rachael L. Baumann. It was prepared with financial support from the National Science Foundation (DUE 2336987 and 2336988) in collaboration with Washington State University.
