This digital experiment expands an ideal gas, which is at high pressure in the left tank, adiabatically into the right tank, which is initially evacuated. Select the volume of each tank (25, 50 or 100 L), and set the initial pressure and temperature of the gas in the left tank with the sliders. Then open the valves on the top of the two tanks by clicking them. To expand the gas into the right tank, open the valve connecting the tanks by clicking on it. Hover your mouse over the pressure gauges to expand their size for readability. Reset the simulation by clicking the "Reset" button. Click the "Worksheet" button to download the worksheet for this experiment.
This digital experiment was created in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, at University of Colorado Boulder for LearnChemE.com by Neil Hendren under the direction of Professor John L. Falconer and Michelle Medlin. It is based on a Mathematica simulation prepared by Neil Hendren. This digital experiment was prepared with financial support from the National Science Foundation (DUE 2336987 and 2336988) in collaboration with Washington State University.
